The deisgn for the monster a.k.a "The Beast" has been finalized so let me take this moment to explain my design process.
With every character design I encounter to always start with the most essential element: the shape hierarchy. I draw out a rough shape of what I want the overall form to be before carving it down into something I vaguely like. I usually repeat this process upwards four times until I get the ressult I want. I have found myself enjoying my first try however, I found myself having trouble trying to find that perfect balance between a pleasing design that is simple enough to animate and a design unnerving enough to creep out the viewers. It took until the third try for me to find something I like. Even then I pushed it two more time to explore my ideas more before finalizing on one too early on.
At this point I start to crack down on the details of the sketch by just cleaning up the edges and adding smaller features like hair and teeth. You can also see with the image bellow all the media I used as inspiration. I got a bunch of random images such as microscopic creatures, abstract sculptures from the artist Berlinde De Bruyckere and even parasite birds' beaks (which I wanted to originally make more apparent however, it would have messied up teh design). The two images I found the most inspiring was this creepy image I found on Pinterest and Capitoline She-Wolf from the 11/12th Century. I also obvious took into account the descriptions I used in my poem such as "burnt" and "horrific" as well as how it would fit into the cabin.
With all that said and done here was the final outcome of my process. I came up with my concept design of the beast that checked all the boxes I had in my mind. With this all done I lined it up with the rest of the cast so I don't have to worry about his size later on.
I hope this was useful to anyone who read this. My next objective is to work on props and set design so that's what my next entry will be on.
